“I met Alyx over 5 years ago around midnight on the shoulder of a one lane highway in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and my life changed direction like a ray of light bouncing off a mirror. For the past 4 years I’ve had Alyx coach me primarily as an athlete, but secretly as a human. My goals were to grow as a runner, and I wanted to grow as a runner because I wanted to grow as a person. I felt that I needed help with expert and experienced advice to become the best possible ‘runner’ I could be. At the time I believed learning to run ultra marathons and running them to the best of my potential was the key to becoming the best version of myself. Simultaneously, I was also very stubborn and felt like I could figure out the training myself.
After getting to know Alyx for a year and running in the races she was organizing; she became one of my most cherished friends. I wanted her to be apart of my journey in sport and life. She had watched me succeed and flounder a handful of times. After floundering a few races I knew I needed help to reach the version of myself I was so desperately looking for. That’s when I took Alyx on as a coach.
To spare the rest of the details of the last four years what I have come to value about our friendship and coaching relationship is Alyx’s ability to look at me as a human being in the context of life. Not as a science project in a math equation. Training was always based on adapting and growing, which meant staying healthy and functional. Balance was always enforced. Personal lifestyle variables always accounted for. My best interest put first. Excitement and camaraderie were an effortless byproduct of the process.
My favorite part of working with her has been trying to read her sneaky psychological tactic’s. Alyx has at times told me I am capable of things I never thought possible. Others times she has made race or workout predictions I found beneath me. Over the years I have learned that this was her way of getting me to dream bigger and firing me up when necessary. She’s always kept me in line never doubting my potential but always keeping it real.
I should note, Alyx speaks the truth and calls it like it is. Whatever it is she’s coaching you for just know you’ll need to be prepared for that, but also remember YOU NEED THAT! There are a lot of people you’re meant to meet in this life, but fewer people who are meant to become apart of your life. I think at the end of the day that’s what’s so special about the coaching relationship with Alyx. She found me and became a part of my life. That’s why I took her on as a coach when I wouldn’t have let anyone else play that role fore me.
I didn’t even realize it until I sat down and wrote this review but I was already one set closer to my goal of growing as an individual just by excepting her help in the first place. I learned to surrender myself to a state of being able to accept help. That was her first lesson.”
